Cancun’s 54th anniversary: Festivities and iconic events
Cancun was officially founded on April 20, 1970. This date marks the beginning of the development of the little-known area into the popular tourist destination it is today. In 2024, Cancun celebrates its 54th anniversary.
Events related to this event are planned from April 12 to 22. During these days, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of popular events, including the “Grand Fiesta of Cancun” scheduled for the 19th and 20th.
There will be a civic ceremony commemorating the anniversary and a solemn session of the municipal council on April 20th. The agenda encompasses events, activations, gifts, and institutional and civic projects for the anniversary.
The “Grand Fiesta of Cancun,” as the main event is known, will start on Friday, April 19th, at Plaza de la Reforma, featuring the showcase of musical bands titled “Musical Expressions in the History of Mexico,” from 18:00 to 23:00.
Additionally, there will be a presentation of the book “Living History of Cancun.”
On April 20th, festivities will start at 9:00 with the civic ceremony at Plaza de la Reforma, followed by the solemn session of the municipal council, during which the “Sigfrido Paz Paredes” medal for civic merit will be awarded.
Starting at 17:30, the “Cancun Residents’ Parade” will commence, featuring eight blocks, each consisting of approximately 200 participants. The parade will start from the Jacinto Canek dome towards Tulum Avenue.
From there, it will proceed down this thoroughfare until reaching Plaza de la Reforma. The parade will include the participation of vintage cars, supported by the Rally Maya and the Antique Car Club, followed by the marching band.
There will be also a performance by the Municipal Band, a Coco Bongo show, and before the cake-cutting ceremony, the traditional “Mañanitas” will be sung with mariachi accompaniment, culminating in an artistic event.
On Monday, the 22nd, at the “Ocean Weddings” Events Garden, the “Golden Weddings” will take place from 16:00 to 18:00. This event will celebrate the first marriages registered in Cancun, as well as the love stories of the city’s pioneers, thus closing out the calendar of activities in celebration of this 54th anniversary.
